Hurricane Sandy hit a lot harder then a lot of people expected it to. I mean people lost there homes and family members. Some people don't have anything right now and are living in shelters until they can go back to their normal lives. About 25 million people lost power and not all of them have it back even now. Some parts of Brooklyn had little damage compared to other places the storm hit. Some lost power and internet and cell service and they think that they had it bad. Well, People in New Jersey froze to death in their owns homes, or their entire house is gone.
But that did not stop people from voting. On November 6th 2012 people took 2 hour long bus rides or walked across bridges just to vote. The government did not want to send voting booths all the way our to the Rockaways and New Jersey. Over 70,000 people traveled the distance to put their votes in.
"I wasn't going to let no Hurricane stop me from voting." Said an angry resident from Queens. These people have just gone through basically hell and now their walking 20 miles to go put their vote in. I think that this really shows how strongly people feel about voting and their rights. Others had it easier some people sent in their votes through email.
Emergency workers from around the nation are removing the rubble to make it easier for the residents to get around by bus or even by walking. They are also bringing food to all of the hard working people who are helping clean up their neighborhoods.
A emergency worker that was being interviewed said "The local polling sites were poorly planned" A resident who over heard the conversation stated " So was this hurricane"
