The Book Case Histories by Kate Atkinson is a book about mysteries. Theres about 5 different stories in the book and I have a feeling that they are all going to connect some how. But the general main idea for all of the stories is that there is a murder or a death in each one. The funny thing is that one person is solving them all. All of the stories are about a family who has lost at least one person. The ones that are murders theres always a family member that is being accused of the death. In the beginning of the book they introduce the first story, which is about a mom who doesn't really love any of her children except for one and she gets kidnapped. I think that its kind of suspicious because the kids know that the mom only loves Olivia (the one that gets kidnapped) and theres 3 other kids and one of them is a little bit crazy. When the book switches back to this story its 33 years later and the little girl is still missing.
In the second story The theme of it is Murder. Its about a very loving father who takes his 21 year old daughter to work with him. He leaves to get the whole office lunch and he comes back to a very bloody death scene. As he's going from room to room he finds his daughter dead and a secretary that told him everything that happened and how the murderer escaped. Now the dad is very upset and is blaming everything on himself. He's also not stopping at anything to find the person who killed his daughter. Its strange how one moment everything would be okay and the next moment your whole life could be ruined. The difference between this one and the other stories is that someone actually cares about the person that has died. In the other ones its always the dad that didn't treat his kids very well and siblings that were mean and crazy.
The detective that is trying to solve most of these cases also has his own problems with his family and money issues. While trying to solve all of these other mysteries, he is trying to solve his own. His ex-wife is trying to take full custody of his kids and they don't want to visit him, and listening to all of these people rant about how they are glad that this person died and he's just thinking how could all of these people just treat their family members like this. when his family is falling apart these people are trying to get rid of theres.
I'm only about half way through the book so I've only heard about half of these peoples stories but I can already tell that some of these people really have it rough. Loosing all of these people must be pretty hard even if they don't actually like them very much.
