Romeo and Juliet essay


Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespere is the book that I just finished. Romeo changes throughout the story, because at first he is depressed and lovesick over Rosaline, who does not love him back. Then as soon as he meets Juliet, he is happy and very much in love with her. He completely forgets about Rosaline after he met Juliet. This change affects the people around him, because he wants to stop the fighting between the two houses. He is in love with a capulet, Who happens to be his family, The Montagues enemy.


Romeo changes throughout the story, and the first time I noticed this change was the night of the capulet's party, where he met Juliet for the first time. He fell in love with her at first sight, and instantly forgot about Rosaline. He was so in love with Juliet that he went and visited her that night, knowing that he was risking his life, because she was a capulet. He climbed up the orchard wall to talk to her. While there, he pulled out the charm. [direct quote from the text]
They fell deeply in love with each other, even though they both knew it was dangerous and they could never be together.


Throughout the story, Romeo goes through a change, that effects a lot of people. The second time I noticed this change, was after the party at the capulet's house where he first met Juliet. The next morning, he went to talk to Friar Laurence, and told him that he was in love with another girl (Juliet) who he wanted to marry. [direct quote from text] The friar was very confused because just the day before, he was depressed and in love with Rosaline who didn't love him back. Now he's talking about marrying another girl, whom he just met.


Another time I noticed a change with Romeos actions, was during the fight scene, with Tybalt and Mercutio. Tybalt approaches him after he tries to get Mercutio to stop fighting. Romeo then tries to shake Tybalts hand and keep the peace between the 2 houses. [direct quote from text] Tybalt doesn't accept the fact that Romeo doesn't want to fight anymore, because he wants to be friends with the capulets. Tybalt then killed Mercutio. Romeo was devastated and angry and later killed Tybalt out of his own grief.  At first he attempted to keep the peace between the families but after loosing his best friend, he did the one thing he promised not to do. Which was to kill someone.

Romeo changes tremendously after meeting Juliet. First he is depressed and upset about Rosaline denying his love for her. He refuses to go outside and be happy, he's choosing to be sad. After meeting Juliet, a weight is lifted off his shoulders and the sorrow inside of him disappears. He is instantly happy. He wants to stop the fighting between the two families, he acts as a peacemaker during one of the fights but in the end, his anger overcomes his conscience.  After he strikes out on Tybalt he realizes the mistake that he has made, and is almost not able to live with myself and he feels like he can't love Juliet right.
